FAQ
Where do I start?
Start with the Quick Start Guide for setup and the first essentials.
Do I need a phone or computer to use Doly?
Not for basic interaction — Doly works on its own. You only need the app for setup and for accessing extra features such as customization, remote control, and coding (Blockly).
How do I interact with Doly?
There are many ways to interact with Doly. Please visit the “How to Interact with Doly” page to learn more.
Can Doly charge itself?
Yes. Doly can return to its charging station when it needs power.
How long can Doly stay active?
Up to about 4 hours after a full charge (usage varies).
How long does charging take?
About 2 hours to fully charge when it is powered off.
Can I leave Doly running without my supervision?
Doly can sometimes make mistakes due to technological limitations or environmental differences, which may lead to unexpected behavior. For this reason, we recommend keeping an eye on it while it is operating. Since Doly is a small robot, it’s also best to power it off when you are not using it.
What power requirements do I need?
You’ll need a USB power source for charging (type A, minimum 5V / 2A).
Does Doly need to be online?
Internet connection is optional, but recommended for updates and some online utilities (like weather).
How do updates work?
With an internet connection, Doly can automatically download updates and install them at the next startup. When an update is available, you’ll see an Update button in the app settings. You can also force the update to install by tapping this button — Doly will restart and update its firmware.
What about privacy, does Doly send data to the cloud?
Doly’s AI features (including voice and face recognition) are handled locally and your information isn’t sent to cloud servers.
Can Doly speak?
Yes, Doly can use simple words and sounds to express itself, and you can also “speak through” Doly using the app’s Blockly interface. Please note that Doly’s AI features are processed locally, so it cannot answer all questions like ChatGPT or Gemini. We are also working on an optional LLM chat feature that will allow you to choose your preferred level of privacy.
Is there a sleep mode?
Yes, tell Doly: “Hey Doly, go to sleep.”
Â
Any tips for better speech recognition?
Doly can’t process speech while it is responding with sounds, so please wait for Doly to finish its sound before speaking. A quieter room and speaking at a normal pace will also help Doly hear you better.
Â
What is Blockly?
Blockly is a beginner-friendly way to program by dragging and dropping blocks — no syntax required. It’s a great starting point before moving on to text-based coding. Learn more on the Blockly page.
Â
Where can I find the Python & C++ SDK docs?
Visit SDK Documentation (Python & C++).
Â
Are there any examples of how to start with the Python/C++ SDK?
Examples for each API are available in both languages and are linked in the Documentation → Examples section.
Â
Can I upgrade the Raspberry Pi inside Doly?
Yes, but you will need to remove the main board to do so. Please note that this will void the warranty. If you need assistance, our team is always here to help.
Â
Which Raspberry Pi modules work with Doly?
All WIFI included CM4 variants are compatible.
CM4 modules with eMMC require an additional step: you must copy the SD card data to the eMMC. You may also need a CM4 IO board for this process.Â
Â
Is Doly fully open source?
Doly is an open robot platform. The electronics schematics, PCB design files, add-on models, mechanical design files, code examples and documentation are all publicly available on GitHub. However, the software is not fully open source due to the use of third-party paid APIs.
Â
Where are the files (CAD, PCB, software, examples)?
The DOLYÂ GitHub repository includes everything you need.
Â
Is there a subscription fee or any hidden fees?
No, Doly does not require a subscription and has no hidden fees.
